More than 132 years of history and expertise at your service

Société Monégasque de l'Electricité et du Gaz (SMEG), which brought together the SME and SMG companies in 1976, has been distributing electricity and gas in the Principality of Monaco since the end of the 19th century. As a major player in Monaco's energy transition, SMEG manages the distribution, production and supply of energy throughout the Principality.

It also maintains and operates public lighting installations. Thanks to the energy supplied by its subsidiary SMA's waste recycling centre, SMEG also manages an urban heating and cooling plant, seaWergie. SMEG is increasingly diversifying its activities through renewable energy, vehicle charging and digital offerings.

It employs 130 people. It is ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified.

The main shareholder, with 64% of the capital, is ENGIE through its Energy Services division. ENGIE is one of the world's leading energy companies, active across the entire energy chain, in electricity and natural gas, from upstream to downstream.
SMEG
, today's Network branch, with the contribution of its subsidiary and its shareholdings, contributes to these good performances and is a real showcase for the Group's fields of expertise in a limited geographical area.

SMEG • Actionnariat 2

The Monaco State holds 20% of SMEG's capital. It grants SMEG the concession to carry out its activities and monitors its implementation. Under the leadership of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, the Prince's Government is firmly committed to Sustainable Development. This is also one of the main thrusts of the new concession that came into force in 2009.

SMEG • Actionnariat 3

The EDEV holding company, with a 15% shareholding, is at the heart of the Development branch created by EDF in 2002, and its mission is to stimulate the creation of new commercial products and services in order to foreshadow the Group of the future.

Monaco Energies Renouvelables

To support Monaco's transition, the Prince's Government and Société Monégasque de l'Électricité et du Gaz (SMEG) pooled their skills in 2017 to create Monaco Energies Renouvelables (M.E.R.), with the aim of giving Monaco 100% green electricity production capacity equivalent to the territory's consumption. In order to cover the Principality's consumption curve as effectively as possible, a targeted mix of technologies has been defined by the Prince's Government, including photovoltaic, wind and hydro power.

In line with this objective, announces Samy Touati, Chairman of MER, "the Company has just acquired five additional photovoltaic farms in France, with a total production capacity of 53 MWpeak. These sites represent a total annual production of 65,000 MWh, i.e. around 12% of the Principality of Monaco's electricity consumption".

This major new operation brings the total capacity of the power stations owned by M.E.R up to 128 MWpeak (106 MW photovoltaic and 22 MW wind), which together produce 184 GWh per year, i.e. 34% of the Principality's electricity consumption.

Thomas Battaglione, Chief Executive Officer of SMEG and Managing Director of M.E.R., explains: "Every step taken by M.E.R. is a source of great pride for the SMEG teams, who contribute their expertise in the renewable energy sector, identify the best development opportunities and ensure the best possible operating yields". Samy Touati added: "We invest in power plants at every stage of development, from the commissioning of production-ready units to full project development. This strategy enables us to accelerate the build-up of our generating fleet while creating new capacity. The impact of new capacity goes beyond the energy issue, and is part of the environmental rehabilitation of the land used".

At the end of 2020, M.E.R. decided to acquire three projects developed by ABO Wind. This partnership with one of the world's leading wind power developers has resulted in the construction of three wind farms (each comprising between 2 and 4 turbines), two in the Charente region and one in the Côtes d'Armor department.

The wind turbines selected are from Vestas and Nordex, two leading manufacturers, with unit outputs of between 2 and 2.5 MW, and heights of between 145 and 160 m.

Built in favourable areas with suitable wind conditions, these wind turbines will generate a cumulative annual output of 57 GWh, i.e. 10% of the Principality's electricity consumption. Complementing the photovoltaic farms, which only produce during the day, and with a production peak around midday in line with the Principality's peak electricity consumption linked to air conditioning, the wind farms will be able to cover the territory's "base" consumption, particularly at night.
